Minae Kawada Photo Exhibition TREMOLO

Even when I look up at the sky,
their forms remain unseen.
Only the echoes from the sky,
reverberating through my body.

In Kakamigahara City, where I was born and raised, stands the oldest surviving airfield in Japan. In the winter of 2020, I asked my aging father about his memories of the war. He responded with a surprising recollection: “Beneath this house was a massive hole, about 30 meters across. ” His unexpected words transported me back to a distant era of conflict.

At the heart of Kakamigahara lies a plateau once known as Kakamino. This untouched wilderness was transformed into an artillery training ground and airfield, gradually giving rise to a bustling town. In the final days of the Pacific War in 1945, a large bomb was dropped here, and the area later became home to occupying U.S. forces. Today, this plateau hosts the Gifu Air Base of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, as well as factories, homes and tree-filled parks; little remains to hint at its wartime past.

Amid my search for traces of this history, I rediscovered the natural beauty of my birthplace and the deeply personal stories of those who live there. These encounters — the landscapes, the memories, the lives — are etched in my heart, and I will carry them forward into the future.

Minae Kawada Profile

Born in Kakamigahara City, Gifu Prefecture and began her career as a photographer later in life, following the end of her child-rearing years. Has since exhibited her work in Japan and internationally. In 2020, presented Dreaming Planet at the Sony Imaging Gallery, a series capturing the aspirations and emotions of those who pursue their dreams, expressed through the vibrant bursts of fireworks. Since then, has dedicated herself to artistic creation, leading to the production of her latest work, TREMOLO. Her photography seeks to capture the delicate fluctuations and hidden beauty that emerge between light and shadow, color and darkness, reality and imagination — revealing an alternate world that comes into view when one shifts their perspective.
