Tokyo is a city built upon countless layers-of history, culture, climate, and more. Its vibrancy and diversity are shaped not only by its residents but also by the vast number of people who flow in from neighboring prefectures each day. Yet unlike road traffic, there are no statistics showing who comes from where, making it difficult to grasp the true picture of these daily movements.
One day, I discovered that railway companies publish data on passenger traffic for each station. As I examined the figures in detail, I realized that they closely matched my own sense of the city. Visiting unfamiliar neighborhoods to see if the numbers reflected reality, I was once again reminded of Tokyo's remarkable diversity.
For this exhibition, I chose to portray the Tokyo of today using passenger statistics published by the city's railway companies as my point of reference. By capturing the countless people who move through the city like grains of sand, I hope viewers can glimpse a fragment of Tokyo in constant motion and change.
