When I was in high school, at a time when "my world" was still extremely small, I was captivated by the glow of dawn and the colors of sunset visible along my daily route to school. Unlike the moon, the sun never wanes. I was drawn to the way it sinks into the horizon, overlaps with clouds, and transforms the sky from moment to moment - to the reflections on the water's surface and the cityscape dyed in shifting colors.
Back then, as I would stop my bicycle and take photographs with my smartphone, I carried a quiet longing: someday, I want to hold a SLR camera, travel farther, and photograph what lies beyond.
Now, after four years of studying photography, I have shaped that long-held desire into a tangible form.
Faculty Recommendation Comment
Koichiro Ueda, Professor
Many people would describe both the glow of dawn and the colors of sunset as "beautiful." Hashimoto was once one of them - back when she was a high school student. Since then, she has stepped into the world of photography, and four years have passed. Now, she has once again turned her gaze toward these scenes that are universally regarded as beautiful. What allows this work to be recommended today, I believe, is that she has moved beyond the realm of conventional "beautiful photographs." By remaining steadfastly committed to what she herself has felt and perceived, she has succeeded in giving form to a worldview that only Mahiro Hashimoto could express. Her endless journey is still only just beginning.
Thank you very much for visiting the Recommend Exhibition 2026 - Selected Graduation Works from the Department of Photography, Faculty of Arts, Tokyo Polytechnic University.
Tokyo Polytechnic University traces its origins to the Konishi Professional School of Photography, founded in 1923, and marked its centennial milestone in 2023. The Department of Photography represents the very roots of the university. Grounded in an educational framework cultivated over a long history, students spend four years rigorously exploring what "photography" means to each of them. The exhibition is titled Recommend, reflecting the idea of selecting and presenting works of distinction. From among the graduation projects that represent the culmination of the students' studies, 13 artists have been selected by the faculty of the Department of Photography for this exhibition. We hope this presentation offers a glimpse into the "new perspectives" with which these emerging artists - who will help shape the future - are engaging with and observing society.
The environment in which photography is produced, circulated, and engaged with in society continues to change dramatically on a daily basis. Within this shifting context, the works presented here are the result of the artists' dedicated engagement with photography, brought to completion through sustained effort and the resolution of many personal and creative challenges.
We warmly invite you to view the exhibition and hope that you will share words of encouragement with the artists, as well as offer them your insights and guidance as they move forward.
